The Principality of Monaco is heady and prestigious location of six rounds of 2008 Formula 1 World Championship. The 20 cars and drivers will compete in the circuit 3.34 km street race between the Princes Palace and the Mediterranean sea covered in some of the most luxurious yachts.
The theme of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen will be the addition of the illustrious history of the team at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Since the beginning of the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz time the team won the race five times. Mika Häkkinen in 1998, David Coulthard in 2000 and 2002, Kimi Raikkonen took the spoils in 2005 with Fernando Alonso victory just before then team-mate Lewis last year.
The connection to the race back to the 60s, with Bruce McLaren took the M2B to the beach to mark the Formula 1 debut. During that period the team won a record 14 of the 65 Grands Prix staged in the Principality. This began with Alain Prost in 1984, inaugurating a winning formula gap that extends until 1993, except 1987. Five of them were in the hands of Ayrton Senna.
As part of the team ¿½ s ongoing relationship with Steinmetz, creators of the world's finest diamonds, Lewis and Heikki will special diamond encrusted Monaco helmets for the race. Each helmet has the signature of the driver Pavi d ¿½ with a line of hundreds of Steinmetz diamonds by hand. This also marks the first time that the Steinmetz logo - or any other logo of the sponsor in Formula 1 history - has been incorporated into the design of helmets through the application of diamonds.
